Palm Kernel Shell as biomass resource.
When we refer to Palm Kernel Shell (PKS), we are talking about the shell fractions that we get after the nut has been removed after crushing in the Palm Oil mill. Palm Kernel shells is a fibrous material and can be easily handled in bulk directly from the mill to the end use. PKS has big and small shell fractions and are mixed with dust-like fractions and small fibers.
The moisture value in PKS is low, compared to other biomass residues with different sources suggesting values between 11-13%. PKS contain traces of Palm Oil, which contributes for its higher heating value than average lignocellulosic biomasses. If you compare with other residues from the industry, it's a good quality biomass fuel with uniform size distribution, easy to handle, easy to crush and has limited biological activity due to the low moisture it contains.
